What is the biggest size turkey I can fit in my oven?

Christmas is always a balance of how many people you’re hosting and the size of turkey you can fit in the oven?! Most websites suggest a standard oven will take up to a 10kg bird. We suggest you bring your oven tray when you come to collect and try it to be safe! To help, here are some measurements to give you a guide.

Our oven:

  • We can cook a 10kg bird in our standard oven. The internal dimensions of our standard electric oven at home are 43cm (w) x 41cm (d) x 32cm (h). Our Grill tray’s central cavity is 38cm (w) x 34.5cm (d)

  • Check the dimensions of your oven. Something like a Range Master, has an oven cavity size of about: 46 cm (w) x 42 (d) x 43 (h)  & an

    Aga’s internal dimensions of a Roasting oven are stated as 50cm (w) x 34cm (d) x 25.4cm (h)

We measured a few whole turkeys to give you an idea of sizes ( Please note they are just a guide as all Turkeys vary in size even in the same weight range - bring your baking tray if you are concerned and check it fits!)

  • 4kg – 22cm (w) x 30cm (L) x 15cm (h) 

  • 7.5kg - 26cm (w) x 33cm (L) x 17cm (h) , 7.4kg - 27cm (w) x 35cm (L) x 19 cm (h)

  • 10kg - 32cm (w) x 39cm (L) x 19cm (h) , 10kg – 31cm (w) x 38cm (L) x 20cm (h) * Fits our standard oven

  • 11kg – 32cm (w) x 42cm (L) x 20cm (h)

  • 12.5kg - 30cm (w) x 41cm (L) x 20cm (h)   

  • 13kg - 30cm (w) x 43cm (L) x 20cm (h), 13kg – 33cm (w) x 39cm (L) x 20cm (h)

  • 15kg - 34cm (w) x 44cm (L) x 20cm (h)

Oven trays to fit large turkeys:

Make sure you have the biggest oven tray you can fit in your oven, so you can fit your turkey.

  • The biggest oven tray we’ve found is a 37cm x 55cm oven tray - Lacor-20555A-ROASTER 55 CMS. CHEF-ALU by Amazon.co.uk

  • The largest oven tray we’ve found that will fit our oven is an “extra large stainless steel roasting tray 42X31CM” by Prima & available on Amazon at about £10.

Which? guide say most ovens are 60 cm wide - whether they’re compact or a double oven. Have a look at your oven instructions - to see what the recommended “usable cooking space” is.

Small oven options:

Crowns, Breast and turkey rolls are smaller. To give you an example, we measured a few.
A 3kg crown - 23cm (w) x 20cm (d) x 15 (h) & a 2.25kg breast roll - 26cm (w) x 16cm (d) x 10cm (h)

Tip: When cooking a really big turkey, we cook the turkey first & then cook the potatoes whilst the turkey is resting.

Ours cook 30% quicker than most supermarket birds as they’re slowly reared and free range. You can order direct from us and get it delivered or collect it from the farm in West Horsley, Surrey.

We recommend, if you’re worried your oven is too small, you could consider a crown, breast or turkey roll. If you have a lot of people, we also recommend buying 2x breast rolls, this ensures and even cooking as a roll is very dense as there is no cavity. See our product page to see the difference.
